When I became a Slovak citizen, the whole thing came down to one word. “Sľubujem.” I promise. After years of research, paperwork, wrong turns, FBI background checks, appointment problems, and waiting, it almost felt too simple. I expected the moment to feel dramatic. Mostly, it felt like relief. That is probably the most honest way to describe my path to Slovak citizenship. It was not a fairytale, and it was not a grand return to the homeland. The real version is less romantic, but probably more useful: it started as a practical search for options, became more personal over time, and took much longer than I expected. I did not grow up dreaming of Slovak citizenship. I always knew my family had Slovak ancestry, but for most of my life, it was just a fact in the background. My last name, Nosko, was part of my identity, of course, but Slovakia felt far away. It was somewhere in the background of my American life, not something I thought would ever become practical.
