The U.S. Census Bureau issued a supplementary report to the 1990 Census of Population: People's self-reported ancestry. The report shows an impressive number of the U.S. population who indicated they are of Slovak ethnicity. The numbers, of course, represent people who do not necessarily know the Slovak language, but are at least conscious of their ethnic background.
Those of us who have been correlating Slovak surnames with specific locations in Slovakia, in the Surname Location Reference Project, should find these statistics very encouraging. Over 1.8 million people indicated they are of Slovak descent. The Project will grow considerably if just a few take the time to send their surname data.
